Description:
The
1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser was a milestone car of the 50's era. It
was the answer by Mercury to accusations that their designs had become
too conservative and staid. While many of the styling cues came from
past Ford concept cars (compound curve windshield, roof vents,
power "breeze way" rear window, and the now famous "Cruiser" fender
skirts.) the body shell was seperate from the Ford line for the first
time since the 40's. Truly a "Jet Age" design it is one of the most over
the top designs of the 50's. The Venti-Port roof vents provided air
flow for the interior through the retractable rear window. The Turnpike
Cruiser was one of the most gadget laden cars built with memory seat
control, pushbutton transmission, average speed computor and others. It
also was the first car to feature a full padded dashboard and had many
suspension innovations for a smoother ride. The Turnpike Cruiser was
bulit for only 2 years and 7200 2 door hardtops were built in 1957. A
Turnpike Cruiser was the Pace car at the 1957 Indy 500. Almost too over
the top, even for the fifties., the Turnpike cruiser did not sell
particularly well, but today it's design stands out as a unique example
of space age design.
They were powered by a 368ci. V-8 producing 290h.p. that was exclusive to the Turnpike Cruiser and discontinued after the 2 year run.
This car was restored for the Imperial Palace Museum where it was displayed before becoming part of the renowned Calumet Collection of San Diego, Ca. I have owned this car since 2009 and have continually refined it since. The car has been fully mechnically restored with new paint and much of the chrome redone. The interior had been redone as required, with the seats being original and perfect. This without a doubt one of the best examples of a Turnpike Cruiser in existance. It was accepted for display at the 2012 Glenmoor Gathering Concours, recieved an award of distinction at the Ault Park Concours in 2014 http://www.ohioconcours.com/carsbyclass and was accepted for display at the 2014 Concours D'Elegance of Stan Hywett. The car runs and drives perfectly.
